The island of Milos was the greatest centre of the cycladic civilization, with the city of Filakoti as capital, which gave her name to a whole archaiologic period. The source of the island's wealth was the production of "opsidiano" or "opsiano", a rock for making weapons and tools. During Venetocracy, the island became known from the specialised ship-pilots.
